It's Official

Posted February 12, 2008

I heard on the radio this morning that we have officially broken the record for most snow accumulation in a single winter.  76.1 inches and counting.  God only knows how much we'll have by the time it stops.  We have a couple of months left and so far, no sign of a slowdown.

At least I feel somewhat vindicated in all of my complaining.  I am not just whining about winter.  I am whining about the MOTHER OF ALL WINTERS.  So there.

The eighty pounds of cat litter in the back of my car does seem to be helping with the fishtailing problems I was having.  Seeing as how I have no cat, I'll be able to offer Madison-area residents an excellent deal on litter come spring.  Let's say...May?  Hopefully?

*Don't forget, you have until the end of the day Friday to enter the CONTEST in the post below this one.  Keep those memoirs coming!

Don't you live in Wisconsin? Boston has had at least five years with more snowfall (107.6 inches in 1995) than that.

It's as if you're living in Hawaii. :)

I'm not comparing us to anywhere else, just saying this isn't what you expect from a Southern Wisconsin winter. Snow? Yes. Over six feet of it? Not so much. When that last record was set, I was one, so I can't remember one with this much snow. And I do not care for it.

Since we're on the subject, and so that we can have a better understanding of the record, what is the average annual snowfall for southern Wisconsin?

I'm not trying to diminish the record, but knowing the annual average would allow us to better put this record into perspective.

Depending on which site you believe, it's between 35-45 inches. So we're at more than double the conservative estimate and look primed to double the larger number as well.

I have to think that this will also go down as the winter with the most days with measurable snowfall. If we had gotten a whole ton at a time a few times this winter, I don't think that would be as maddening as snow 3-5 days a week every week, with a couple of those snow-free days involving subzero temperatures.

I see tons of snow living in Colorado and about 4,400 ft above you. And last winter we had 38" in two days... snow is expected, what with that whole mountain thing we have going. But this winter, with less snow than the last, I'm complaining more than ever. And I've lived here all my life, complaining every single year. It doesn't matter how much snow we get, just the fact that we're getting any snow is reason enough for me. So your complaining, with record snowfall for this winter, sounds very justified to me. Honestly, if snow doesn't cancel anything, and if you're not using it for snowboarding/skiing/sledding, nor is it snowing to make it a "White Christmas" then what joy can it possibly bring?

Are you sure about that 76 inches thing?? I thought I heard 70 inches BEFORE the 16 inches last Wednesday that shut down half the state ... Just sayin'.

I have been very seriously considering moving to Virginia (I have a friend there) or possibly Florida (I have a friend there) or even California (Millionaire's Club is there ... check my blog for relevance). I'm soooooo over this winter and I never even left to somewhere sunny and warm like TX!

And yet, still, NO SNOW in London.
Hmph.

I suppose the record is impressive, then. It surprised me to learn that Wisconsin doesn't receive as much snow (in general) as Boston. For some reason, I picture Wisconsin as this winter wonderland. Perhaps it comes from listening to Chris Berman too much.

Please ship me your snow. At my expense. I am desperate for a snow day. For some reason the Universe can't get itself together to give me even one snow day. I'd take even a delayed opening at this point. Are you there, God? It's me, a burnt out teacher.
