« I'll take Potpourri for $1000, Alex. | Main | We're really leaving for Japan! Almost definitely! »

Because the paper bags and my leftover Ativan are already packed.

Posted February 05, 2013

Well hello, Internet! I am sitting on the floor with our luggage for the next month while the movers pack up the rest of our stuff. Raj is off trying to find out any information at all about when we might be leaving for Asia. I tried this morning and it did not go spectacularly well. In fact, the best thing I have to say about that conversation is that I did not cry in the man's office.

So. I thought maybe you could help to distract me. By answering a pop quiz! We're going to plan a hypothetical housewarming party for my hypothetical house in a hypothetical location where you can all attend. Then I'll enjoy reading your answers instead of remembering how we have no plans beyond where we're staying tonight!

1. What drink should I fix for you?

2. Name at least one song, artist, or at the very least genre of music I should play.

3. Now tell me at least one essential food item that should be present.

4. Activities? Should there be games, karaoke, cupcake frosting, or other planned fun? Or just booze, food, and talk?

5. What should I not have/do? In other words, what makes you not enjoy a party?

Feel free to add anything else you have to say on the topic. Or off the topic. There are no rules at our pretend party! (Unless you need for there to be rules. In which case, please explain.)

1. Margarita please
2. NKOTB
3. Dessert-- cookies, cake, candy, etc.. Cheese, tortillas, queso. Maybe some stuffing. hehe
4. booze, food, talk is good, but I like games and cupcakes
5. Please don't go into the bathroom and start smoking weed, I will take the keys to the car, that I drove you to this party in, and take them home with me so that you have no way to get home other than walking!

So excited for this party. Maybe we should get some cheap champagne also, I think the name brand was Clemenza!!

!. Fix me a margarita, please. Actually, go ahead and fix me three so I won't have to trouble you for awhile.
2. I like the Barenaked Ladies station on Pandora. Fun, but mellow. (Except sometimes they have to throw in some Train and I must object.)
3. All snacks should be stuffed with or covered in cream cheese.
4. Amy and I will be too busy drinking margaritas and eating cheese to participate in planned fun.
5. Don't get all drunk and break up with Raj and make all your girlfriends spend the rest of the night sitting in your bedroom while you cry. (Whoa, college flashbacks.)

1. I'm with Lisa, who is especially thoughtful about asking for three so she won't have to bother you. I suggest that you send us off in the corner with a pitcher of margaritas.

2. We've discovered that the David Bowie station on Pandora plays everything from classic rock (Zeppelin, Rolling Stones) to 80s alternative (Depeche Mode, The Cure). It's not a perfect formula, but it is 100% Train free.

3. I was going to go with cupcakes, but it seems wrong to have margaritas without queso. So, queso.

4. Margaritas, queso and conversation sound like excellent planned fun. Also travel planning. One of my favorite nights was spent sitting around with friends while everyone shared their favorite destinations and dream destinations. There was much googling and debate about the merits of beachy slacking vs. physical activity.

5. Political and/or religious conversion attempts should be forbidden. This should be a standing rule at all parties, but evidently my last one did not have this rule in effect.

Can we have a fire pit and s'mores? It'll be a nice break from the queso.

Drink: I'm easy to please, but most of the time I prefer red wine. If you're in a place where something else is traditional (saki, rum, etc.), I'll be happy to try whatever the locals enjoy.

Music Genre: Can't go wrong with reggae, in my opinion (it's usually peaceful, take-it-easy, "don't worry 'bout a 'ting"). But "Classic Rock" is always a good choice (Stones, Beatles, Aerosmith, CCNY...)

Essential food: Again, easy to please and always willing to try local favorites. I'm trying to eat primal/paleo (but no dairy), so nuts, veggies, or guacamole are always good.

Activities? Backgammon used to be a popular hanging-out or partying activity. I haven't played it in years, but it's about time I did! Plus, it seems to be a game other cultures know. I'm also happy to walk outdoors, so walking to/from some local site would be a good thing before partaking of the refreshments.

Forbidden? Hmmm... I'm usually easy to please, and much more willing to try new things. Just make sure everyone is introduced, so I don't feel like I don't know anyone, and that will usually be good enough.

1. Rusty Nail. Or Vodka/Cranberry if you don't have Scotch and Drambuie handy. Or plain soda water with lime.
2. I'm a sucker for classic rock (please, no Doors) and quirky Canadian bands (Moxy Früvous, Odds), but understand parties might need more defined beats.
3. Chips, guac, salsa, queso, maybe a taco bar if you're feeling extravagant.
4. Twister! And Scrabble. And conversation. And karaoke.
5. Oh, let's just think positively; I'm positive it will be a lovely party. Welcome to your new home!

Man, I thought I knew what I was going to write and then I read all of these excellent answers and I want to go to those parties, too. Can we convene annually at one of each our houses to make this happen?

1. voldka & cranberry
2. motown
3. something sweet next to something salty so I can go back and forth all night
4. karoke (duh)
5. Don't tell Amy when I've gone into the bathroom.

As soon as I hit "post" (break time was over and I had to get back to work), I thought of other drinks, other foods, other party activities.

Sounds like we have lot of Margarita fans. Works for me!

And I'm all for Alisa's suggestion to forbid political and religious discussions.
